2010
Left a startup for my first real job. Thinned my collection from ten bikes to two bikes. Built two wheels. Was named one of Greater Topeka’s Top 20 Professionals Under 40. Also got accepted into the 2011 Leadership Greater Topeka class. Helped grow the Topeka Community Cycle Project into a bigger organization. Rode about 2,000 miles on my bicycle, commuting and whatever else. ...

America in Decline →
xntrek: There is a very interesting read over at Alternet that looks at the USofA from the point of view of an expat in the European Union.  An excerpt: The European Union has a larger economy and more people than America does. Though it spends less — right around 9 percent of GNP on medical, whereas we in the U.S. spend close to between 15 to 16 percent of GNP on medical — the EU pretty...

Tried out the synthetic ice at the zoo. It’s fun, but different from real ice. Less traction, but the falls are nicer on bones. Saw True Grit. Not as good as the original. Saw Black Swan. Loved it. What a ride! On Christmas Day, I woke up late, got dressed, and did laundry. I guess this is what it’s like to be an adult. Kinda different from waking up super early, wearing PJs to the...

Who are these people? Who are these people, who curate the galleries? Who are these people who find the images? Who love owls, and nature, and the outdoors? Why do they pick these photographs of celebrities? Why do they like these utilitarian objects of design more than others? What is their obsession with denim and plaid? Can you go wrong with pictures of Michael Jackson? I think you can. I...

I want to quit my phone.
Really. I think I could get by without a cell phone. I would still use Google Voice and Skype. It would mean no texting. No constant barrage of Facebook messages. No tweets on the fly. It sounds pretty nice. It would be hard for a while, but I am very tempted to try it. At the very least, I’d like to find a way to be less distracted by my phone.

Big fish, small pond syndrome
No matter how big you are, how important you feel – No matter how many magazine covers your likeness has graced – No matter how many songs you’ve written and how many times they’ve been played on the radio – You’re not that important. No matter how many people know your name, or how many people recognize you in public – you’re not that important. No matter how many fans or...

This is a band whose music I can dance and groove to, and whose lyrics I can unabashedly sing along with for an entire concert. They put on a very nice show at Blue Planet Cafe on Saturday night. I’m so pleased to see their popularity grow locally and beyond. Go have a listen. And if you missed Saturday, here’s kinda what it looked like.

Slept late. Missed two of the buses I could have taken to work. Decided to walk. Made the 4.2-mile trek in about 50 minutes. Wearing logger boots. ughh.

Let Me Tell You About My Mother's Work →
judgernaut: This is important. I mean, I feel like my work is important, but mama’s blows mine out of the water. My mom works for an organization called Veronica’s Voice in Kansas City, MO.  It was developed to help locate and rehabilitate young girls and women who have been victims of sex trafficking in the United States.  This is an invisible problem that is, literally, everywhere.  My...

I took NyQuil last night, and all kinds of crazy stuff happened. Also, I keep my house at 50 degrees, so I kept waking up because my toes were cold. Anyway. I was traveling in England with my dad. We were accosted and taken hostage by these two Snatchers/Rockers. (think Harry Potter). They demanded a ransom before they would let us go. They took us to some kind of big apartment building, and we...
